What is happening

The Pokemon Cafe in Nihonbashi, Tokyo closed for renovation on 23 March 2026. It reopens on 17 June 2026. The cafe operator framed the closure as a menu update and interior refresh rather than a full rebuild. The Osaka cafe stayed open through the entire renovation window, so anyone with city flexibility kept booking on the normal schedule.

The reopening came with a one-off release. Instead of opening reservations one day at a time (the normal pattern where today's 18:00 JST release covers the date exactly 31 days from now), the cafe released all 21 days from 17 June to 7 July in a single event at 18:00 JST on 17 May 2026. That has already happened. From 8 July onwards the cafe is back to the standard daily 31-days-ahead release at 18:00 JST.

Most of the reopening dates are now in cancellation-pickup territory, not first-release territory. That changes the strategy but it does not close the door.

Why this matters more than a normal release

On a normal day the cafe drops a single date at 18:00 JST. Demand is high, but the queue is contained to one date and one party-size grid. The release for 17 May 2026 broke that pattern in two ways.

This is why every Pokemon Cafe news site and travel blog covered the May 17 event so heavily. It was the single largest reservation drop the cafe has run since launch.

Can you still get a seat?

Yes. The cafe's cancellation deadline is 22:00 JST the night before every visit. Any guest holding a reservation can cancel up to that moment without penalty, and the freed seat returns to the public booking site immediately. That means seats become available 24 hours a day, right up to the day before each visit, all the way through the reopening window and beyond.

Cancellation density is highest 7 to 10 days before each date. People book in advance, then plans shift, and they cancel as the date gets closer. Late-afternoon slots (16:00 onwards) tend to free up more often than the lunch slot. Weekday dates churn more than Saturdays.

The first three weeks (17 June to 7 July) are the highest-demand block. Mid-week dates and late-afternoon slots in that block are the most realistic targets for a cancellation pickup.

Frequently asked questions

When does the Pokemon Cafe Tokyo reopen?

17 June 2026. It closed for renovation on 23 March 2026.

I missed the 17 May release. Is the reopening window over for me?

No. The 17 May event was the first window to grab dates between 17 June and 7 July. Cancellations happen continuously, and the cafe's cancellation deadline is 22:00 JST the night before each visit. Seats free up 24 hours a day right up to the day before.

Did the cafe change during the renovation?

The reservation system is unchanged: same 31-day-ahead release, same 18:00 JST timing, same 90-minute sittings, same six-guest cap. The location is the same (Nihonbashi Takashimaya). The cafe has signalled a menu refresh but has not published a detailed change-list.

Is the Tokyo booking flow different from Osaka?

No. Both cafes use the same reservation system: pick party size, pick date, pick time slot, fill in your name and email, receive a verification code by email, enter the code, get your confirmation.

How fast will the cafe sell out after each cancellation?

A freed seat usually disappears within seconds of returning to the public booking site, especially for popular dates in the first three weeks. Manual refreshing rarely catches one.

What if you cannot get any of my dates?

Stripe refunds your card automatically the day after your last preferred date passes without us booking it. You will see the refund in your bank in 5 to 10 business days. No email to chase, no support ticket.
