After almost three months closed for renovation, the Nihonbashi cafe is back. Here is what changed, the dates, and how to grab a seat.

The Pokemon Cafe in Nihonbashi, Tokyo closed for renovation on 23 March 2026. It reopens on 17 June 2026. The cafe operator framed the closure as a menu update and interior refresh rather than a full rebuild. The Osaka cafe stayed open through the entire renovation window, so anyone with city flexibility kept booking on the normal schedule.
The reopening came with two bulk releases, not one. Instead of opening reservations one day at a time (the normal pattern where today's 18:00 JST release covers the date exactly 31 days from now), the cafe ran two concentrated drops. First it released all of 17 June to 7 July in a single event at 18:00 JST on 17 May 2026. Then it released all of 8 July to 31 July in a second single event at 18:00 JST on 7 June 2026. Both of those have already happened. From 1 August onwards the cafe is back to the standard daily 31-days-ahead release at 18:00 JST.
Most of the reopening dates are now in cancellation-pickup territory, not first-release territory. That changes the strategy but it does not close the door.
In short: The Tokyo reopening dates dropped in bulk waves: 17 June 2026 to 7 July 2026 released together at 18:00 JST on 17 May 2026; 8 July 2026 to 31 July 2026 released together at 18:00 JST on 7 June 2026; 1 August 2026 to 31 August 2026 released together at 18:00 JST on 1 July 2026. From 1 September 2026 onward Tokyo runs on the normal daily 31-day rolling 6pm JST release, one day at a time, like Osaka.
On a normal day the cafe drops a single date at 18:00 JST. Demand is high, but the queue is contained to one date and one party-size grid. The two reopening releases (17 May and 7 June 2026) broke that pattern in two ways.
This is why every Pokemon Cafe news site and travel blog covered the reopening releases so heavily. They were the largest reservation drops the cafe has run since launch.
Yes. The cafe's cancellation deadline is 22:00 JST the night before every visit. Any guest holding a reservation can cancel up to that moment without penalty, and the freed seat returns to the public booking site immediately. That means seats become available 24 hours a day, right up to the day before each visit, all the way through the reopening window and beyond.
Cancellation density is highest 7 to 10 days before each date. People book in advance, then plans shift, and they cancel as the date gets closer. Late-afternoon slots (16:00 onwards) tend to free up more often than the lunch slot. Weekday dates churn more than Saturdays.
The reopening window (17 June to 31 July) is the highest-demand block. Mid-week dates and late-afternoon slots in that block are the most realistic targets for a cancellation pickup.

No. The two bulk events (17 May for 17 June to 7 July, and 7 June for 8 July to 31 July) were the first windows to grab those dates. Cancellations happen continuously, and the cafe's cancellation deadline is 22:00 JST the night before each visit. Seats free up 24 hours a day right up to the day before.
The reservation system is unchanged: same 31-day-ahead release, same 18:00 JST timing, same 90-minute sittings, same six-guest cap. The location is the same (Nihonbashi Takashimaya). The renovation brought a refreshed menu (some long-running dishes retired in June 2026 and new ones added), a new central Pikachu parfait show during each sitting, and a refreshed interior.
No. Both cafes use the same reservation system: pick party size, pick date, pick time slot, fill in your name and email, receive a verification code by email, enter the code, get your confirmation.
A freed seat usually disappears within seconds of returning to the public booking site, especially for popular dates in the first three weeks. Manual refreshing rarely catches one.
Stripe refunds your card automatically the day after your last preferred date passes without us booking it. You will see the refund in your bank in 5 to 10 business days. No email to chase, no support ticket.
